My name is Shannon Wallack and I am the owner along side my partner Danea Barilaro of ShanMan Clay Co. We are based in Boston, Massachusetts. With 10 years of experience in ceramics, as well as industrial design backgrounds, we love sharing our craft with the community.
We primarily work in ceramic but we do tend to dabble in other mediums. Our creative process is something that we have a lot of pride in wether it is the mold making, the hand building and the firing. One unique process that is very signature to us is the process we use to fire our pieces called Saggar Firing. Saggar firing involves no glaze or painting, just natural materials thrown into the kiln to create beautiful natural organic colors. Saggar fire beautifully mirrors the randomness that we encounter in our lives. We can control the colorants that we introduce to the firing atmosphere for example we know if we put egg shells around the pieces they will burn off blue, or if we put seaweed around the piece it will turn green, but we cannot control what emerges from the kiln. Each piece is its own work.
