Scavenger Hunt Update: Who's Winning + LOTS of New Point Values

Greetings NuBe Hunters! Just one week in, the response to our Scavenger Hunt has been incredible, with several teams across the country submitting entries ranging from haikus, to recommendations for fantastic US producers, to things Ryan Gosling would say if he thought like a NuBian. One person even went crabbing…in the buff. That’s a risky way to get 100 bonus points, but reports say all important parts are intact.

Having tracked entries for a week, we’re making a few changes to ensure overall fairness and to encourage ongoing creativity with entries:

Missing the "American Made" in World Cup Patriotism

The world's attention is on Brazil and the World Cup, but not everyone is focused on the ball. Interpol is closely monitoring flight lists, border crossings, and tickets, looking for criminals who can't resist cheering on their national team. (Jose Diaz Barajas, a suspected Mexican drug trafficker, has already been arrested.) Fashion bloggers around the world agree that, while Italy may not have the best chances for winning the World Cup, their three-piece Dolce & Gabbana suits have already won many hearts. NuBe, too, is fully engrossed in the World Cup and eagerly cheering on the United States, but as a store dedicated to products that are U.S Made and sourced, we can't help but be disappointed by our uniforms.

Hop, Skip, Go Naked.
Hop, Skip, Go Naked is a staple drink on any college campus, which is why we were so excited to find this upgraded version in our favorite cocktail book, Shake. Substitute a local craft vodka (may we suggest Glass Vodka, distilled right here in Seattle) for the cheap stuff we KNOW you were drinking in college and Fremont Brewing Company's Summer Ale for Natural Light and you'll have a drink that satiates even the most discerning palate.

Confronting the Meaning of Sustainability

As our twitter followers may remember, NuBe Green attended (and live tweeted) the GoGreen conference last month. The conference provided an opportunity for businesses and government officials in Seattle to get together and discuss, debate and educate each other on issues of sustainability and green business practices.

From food production to transportation and building maintenance, the conference’s keynote speakers covered a diverse array of topics, all addressing the need for businesses and governments to commit to making sustainability a priority.

Most of our customers know that NuBe Green's mission is to find unique, hand-crafted products that are U.S made and sourced and sustainable. Sustainability is an integral part of NuBe's identity, but as speaker after speaker used the word, I began to wonder: what does "sustainability" really mean?

NuBe Love: Jan Reingold

The driving force behind NuBe Green lies in the creative souls that make up our team, which is why we would love to introduce you to the irreplaceable Jan Reingold! Jan designs her own jewelry under the moniker Izanna Jewelry and also works at Tatters, but brings her talent and energy to NuBe once a week.

Jan is a wealth of inspiration, so we couldn’t resist asking her a few questions about the grittiness of Capitol Hill, the importance of implementing repurposed items in designs and why spending the day at NuBe never really feels like work.

April 30th: GoGreen Seattle, A Conference with a NuBe Philosophy

The annual GoGreen sustainability conference will be held tomorrow in downtown Seattle.

The GoGreen website describes the event as "a one-day, interactive learning experience featuring tactical how-tos, a solutions-centered deep dive into new ways of thinking, and a showcase of regional business leaders and their success stories." We thought that sounded like an event NuBe fans would be interested in (full transparency: NuBe Green is a Community Partner for the conference).

Ruth's Stream of Consciousness: Piloting a Local Business in an E-Commerce World

I've been thinking a lot about the growing success of e-commerce and its effect on our local businesses. What would happen to the neighborhood I grew up in if our dependable grocery store of 60 years (which I've been frequenting for the past 51) went out of business? I personally know that many residents here would be devastated. I depend on them for that last minute cilantro I forgot to grab at Whole Foods, or that load of Ice Cream my stoned sister is craving.
