These vases and baskets are inspired but luscious natural forms; flowers, seed pods, fruit. They also have references to the human body, as if they are the skin stretched over interior flesh and bone. My studio is here in Capitol Hill, so I’m as local an artist as they come. I build everything by hand, slowly, using simple tools. I do this because it is joyful and relaxing, but also because I think it is necessary. I think the act of working with our hands connects us to history and to one another. – James Lobb
